Bolder Boulder 2009

rabbit-headsI’m hacking up both lungs with bronchitis, procrastinated on registering and had a little baby dolphin when I saw the price tag of the “procrastinator’s” registration fee… what can I say?  A few months ago Sophie and I were absolutely going to run the home-grown Bolder Boulder with 50,000 of our fellow crazies.  Today, we stood on the sidelines and cheered while Becky and Oakley walked their first Bolder Boulder.  Things got interesting pretty quickly.

I’ve never been a spectator at Boulder’s little Memorial Day “Mardi Gras”.  Sophie and I lugged our camel-baks, snacks, hats, sunglasses and camera with two fully-charged batteries.  We settled in at the end of Mile 1 to wait for Becky and Oakley to come through, thinking we’d jump in and walk with them for a bit before ducking out before the finish line.  Only problem was, we didn’t see them come through Mile 1.  I was a little distracted.

After a while I noticed that the volunteers were starting to sweep the course.  I texted Becky and found them almost half a mile ahead of us.  We jogged ahead and cut across the course to wait at the beginning of mile 5.  Sophie forgot her inhaler at home and was wheezing after our brief run; I didn’t want to make her miserable by hustling her through a crowd.  We stationed ourselves by the last Aid Station and snapped a few more pics:

And then Sophie spotted them!!

Oakley says next year he’ll wear the sombrero, maybe something more colorful too, just to “fit in”.  A teenager has to blend into the crowd, you see…
