Northwestern Mood

Saturday’s run has been relegated to memory; it’s Thursday now and I’m just sitting down to write.  The things that struck me most about the run on Saturday were interesting for the first few days.  Now that more time has passed I realize that I received something totally different.

I was dreading Saturday’s run.  I had agreed to meet a friend for her “long run” of two hours over gently rolling hills instead of the usual trail running I adore.  The problem was that I hadn’t slept well in about two weeks and all [Read more...]

It Just Depends on the Day

Four out of nine were up for extending after eight miles.  Sarah, Shari and Siga (the three S’s) waited for me in the parking lot.  Siga had my key in her pocket and used it as a “carrot” to entice me to keep going.  I laughed at her silliness; I think the laughter gave me an energy boost because I was able to stick with them for the fifteen minute out-and-back.  The trail was wet from all the rain we’ve had over the last month, and we chatted about the amazing abundance of wildflowers in the foothills.  So many people were out on the trails; it was startling to see all the runners and walkers enjoying Boulder’s open spaces.  Everyone was friendly and we exchanged greetings with every group we passed.

My Vacation to the Isle of Bronchitis

After all my moaning and griping about injury and illness in the past months, I’ve decided that they’re both good to have in my life.  After each one, I feel like I’ve been on vacation.

I’ve been out of commission for two weeks with bronchitis.  Bronchitis is the bane of my existence, and always has been.  Some people get sinus infections; I get bronchitis.  I’ve had it forty times if I’ve had it once.  Thank God for antibiotics.  I know there are people who spurn antibiotics and I too, love homeopathy at times.  But I’m a firm believer that there are certain moments in a person’s life when they have to be wise enough to listen to what the body needs, and do it.  Bronchitis is one of those times with me.  I don’t play around with naturopathic, homeopathic or Ayurvedic medicine when I feel the racking coughs and wheezes come knocking at my door.  I get my fanny in to the Doctor and secure a prescription as fast as you can say “Z-pack”.   Then I curl up on the couch with an assortment of water, hot tea, O.J. and Emergen-C, and sleep, read, or stare out the window with vacant eyes.

It’s been two weeks now, and I’m on the tail end of this thing.  I finished my last dose of medicine this morning.  I ran North Fork/South Fork from NCAR on Saturday with the ladies and sucked wind the entire way.  My cough announced my arrival to the other runners, though it felt good to tickle the backsides of my lungs with a little fresh air.

I’m sitting down at the computer to write again for the first time in two weeks.  I’m catching up on the work that I let slide and clearing off my desk.  I’m starting to look at the yard with a critical eye, meaning that I’ve got some desire to get out there and move things around.  I have a list of projects next to my computer that need attention in the near future.  In short; I’m back from vacation.  I zoned out and lost touch for a few weeks while my body fought its own battle.  I’m more refreshed than I felt three weeks ago and the little aches and pains of running are gone.  Maybe being sick isn’t as fun as going to Mexico, but it’s a lot cheaper, the kids didn’t miss any school, and my animals kept me company in my own bed.  Checking out while still being at home?  Thank YOU bronchitis, for visiting!  Take care, I know I’ll see you again.
