Today is a rest day. I’m taking the day off from running, cycling, lifting, swimming, and thinking heavy thoughts. I feel drained, but in a good way. I’ve pushed my body through its paces, I’ve been passionate about my family, books, and work, and I’ve had meetings about each of those topics.
Today is a rest day. I’m tired. I don’t need to push myself any harder. It’s sunny outside and it’s Friday. If it were warmer outside I would lay on a chaise lounge and soak up the healing rays of the sun and let my core be warmed.
Today is a rest day. I’m going to pick my kids up from school, bake some bread, and watch Connor run his R.C. truck around the cul-de-sac. I’m going to sit, and let the stillness rejuvenate my body and spirit. It’s been a long week.
Tomorrow I’ll be ready to run again, but for today, I will rest.

I’m feeling the same way… it’s been a long week. I love that you included the “heavy thinking” in there. That should be a required component of all rest days! I’m going to incorporate that philosophy into my evening today at least!
Jill, it’s been one of those weeks, hasn’t it! I’ve heard the same thing from several folks today. Have a good evening resting.
Good for you Lara! Rest days are training days too … so hard to remember that sometimes. Without resting all that lifting, running, swimming doesn’t help buid you up, it is just breaking you down. It is those magic “rest days” that build us back up stronger mentally and physically.
Enjoy it! Best from Austin, Joe
i hope you enjoyed your rest day!!! They are very necessary!!!
Just found your blog through another Jill over at Jill Will Run.
Great post- and I agree, we must take a rest from heavy thinking! And sometimes from moving too
Jill, thanks for stopping by! It’s nice when we find we have mutual friends. I’ve enjoyed your blog as well, thanks for leaving the URL link. Cheers!
Don’t you love the feeling of a well-earned rest day? Good for you for not only taking one, but for remembering to enjoy it!
Amy, I think I would literally fall apart if I didn’t have a rest day now and again. They’re insideous like that; they sneak up, grab you, and hold you hostage until they have their way with you.
