Waiting for the Sun

Dearest Sun, where have you gone?
Have I offended you?  Has another mistress called?
You’ve left me pining, crying, a shadow of my former self.

I miss the warmth of your rays as you kiss my naked shoulders,
Your sweet sigh as you caress the beads of sweat from my brow,
The hide-and-seek of patterns on the warm mountain ground.
I run, but it’s not the same without you.
I look to the east, expecting to see you on our early morning rendezvous,
But all I see are your teasing colors, beneath an unending layer of clouds.

My mind is foggy without you.
I can go a day, maybe two, without your smile,
But then Loneliness creeps back in and I am a prisoner of darkness.

I tell myself to go outside, that maybe you’ll appear.
But I don’t really believe it; I’ve started leaving my sunglasses at home.
My legs go through the motions of running, but they feel like lead.
Only you, dear Sun, can bring that joy to my heart.
You lift the burden of heaviness from my bones and give me wings.

Dearest Sun, don’t you know that I treasure you above the others?
Snow, Clouds, Cold, and Wind don’t hold a candle to you.
You open my heart and fill me with a joy that is the essence of life.

I’ll wait for you, a faithful lover. I need you as I need air for my lungs.  Please come back soon.
